About LCCPS Athletic and Community Center Project

1. What is the Athletic & Community Center Project

The Lowell Community Charter Public School (LCCPS) Athletic & Community Center is a new approximately 15,000 sq. ft. facility designed to support student wellness, athletics, and community engagement.

The Center will feature:

· A full-sized gymnasium with a regulation MIAA basketball court

· Bleacher seating for approximately 400 spectators

· A dividable gym space to support multiple physical education classes simultaneously

· Modern audio/visual systems for assemblies, performances, and events

· Secure entry access from Middlesex Street

· Men’s and Women’s restrooms

· Accessibility features including elevator access

2. Why is LCCPS building this facility

LCCPS currently operates with a gymnasium that is undersized and not designed to support a full range of physical education and athletic programming.

The new Athletic & Community Center will:

· Provide students with access to a safe, modern, and appropriately sized athletic facility

· Expand physical education programming and extracurricular opportunities

· Allow LCCPS to host home athletic events for the first time

· Create a flexible space for school-wide gatherings, performances, and community use

3. How can we support the Athletic & Community Center Project?

Community members, families, and supporters can contribute to the project through a donation to the Learn to Lead Foundation, the school’s nonprofit partner supporting capital and programmatic initiatives.

Additional opportunities may include:

· Naming opportunities within the facility

· Sponsorship of specific spaces or features

· Corporate and community partnerships

Contact the Development Office to learn more: Development@lccps.org

4. What will the school do with the existing gym space?

The current gym space will be repurposed to better support student learning and programming needs. Potential uses include:

· Additional classroom space

· Student support services

· Expanded programmatic or enrichment areas

Final plans will align with the school’s long-term goal of consolidating and optimizing all academic programming within Mill No. 5.

5. How long will construction take and when will the facility open?

Construction of the Athletic & Community Center is anticipated to begin in Summer 2026 and will take approximately 14 months to complete.

The facility is expected to open in Fall 2027.

6. What are the benefits of the new Athletic & Community Center?

The new facility will provide significant benefits, including:

· A dedicated, regulation-sized space for physical education

· Expanded athletic offerings such as basketball, volleyball, and indoor soccer

· The ability to host home games and school events

· A venue for assemblies, performances, and community gatherings

· Improved student health, wellness, and engagement

7. Who can use the new Athletic & Community Center?

The facility will primarily serve LCCPS students during the school day and for school programming.

Outside of school hours, the space will be available for:

· Local youth and club sports organizations

· Community events and gatherings

· Nonprofit and civic use

This shared-use approach strengthens LCCPS’s role as a community anchor in Lowell.

8. How is the project being funded?

The Athletic & Community Center project is being funded through a combination of:

· Tax-exempt bond financing

· Philanthropic contributions and fundraising efforts

· Support from the Learn to Lead Foundation

As a public charter school, LCCPS does not receive state funding for school facilities and must independently finance capital projects.

9. Will construction impact students or school operations?

LCCPS is working closely with its project team to minimize disruption to daily school operations.

Construction will be carefully phased and managed to ensure:

· Student and staff safety at all times

· Continuity of academic programming

· Limited impact on access and logistics

10. Who is involved in the design and construction of the project?

The project is being led by a team of experienced professionals, including:

· Architects

· Engineers

· Construction managers

· Owner’s Project Manager (PCA360)

This team brings significant experience in school and community-focused construction projects

11. How does this project benefit the Lowell community?

Beyond serving LCCPS students, the project will:

· Revitalize an underutilized area along Middlesex Street

· Create new opportunities for community events and partnerships

· Provide shared recreational space for local organizations

· Contribute to the continued growth and vibrancy of downtown Lowell
